My younger sister--she's says dude to me, to our mom, to her girl friends, etc. I also have girl friends my age who say dude to me and to their girl friends. So I guess in my experience, girls say dude to anyone and guys or at least I say dude only to other guys. Having recently had the misfortune to happen upon one or two horrendous TV reality shows on MTV I too noticed the strange phenomenon of American girls adressing each other as "dude" or "man".
To my ear this sounds as ridiculous as it is dated. However, from reading what is above, it seems it is acceptable in colloquial AE. Has such usage now become standard in younger circles?
Hello Pedro, Nothing much has changed since this thread was active earlier this year. The usage was, and remains, common. It is not limited to "younger circles". I hear females over the age of 40 calling one another dude and other, similar terms with some frequency—almost daily in fact. They do this in a playful way, mocking one another, or perhaps themselves, by use of terms more commonly used by their children.
It is a self-conscious, jocular use of the word. If someone from, say, Dublin were to be walking down my country lane and hear one of these exchanges, I imagine it would certainly sound strange. You would understand the literal meaning, but be disconcerted by it. The joking nature of the name-calling would not be evident if you were not accustomed to it.
